Bruce Guthrie

Director

Bruce Guthrie is the Head of Theatre and Films at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai. An award-winning theatre director and producer, his work has been staged at leading theatre festivals in London’s West End and New York City.

At the NCPA, he has played a pivotal role in creating and developing key initiatives such as Connections India, Backstage Pass, and The Art of the Possible, supporting emerging talent and theatre education. He is also the founder of Darpan, a new writing initiative for the Marathi Theatre Festival, Pratibimb, now in its fourth year. In December 2024, he led the NCPA’s first-ever collaboration with the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META), bringing together four former META winners to launch the 20th META Celebrations. In April 2025, he relaunched the Vasant Gujarati Theatre Festival at the NCPA after a 7-year hiatus.

His directing credits include: St Nicholas (NCPA Mumbai), Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (NCPA Mumbai), Sea Wall (Add Art Festival, NCPA Mumbai), Constellations (NCPA, Mumbai), Man To Man (Wilton’s Music Hall, UK tour & Brooklyn Academy of Music), RENT: 20th Anniversary Production (St James Theatre & UK tour), The Last Mermaid with Charlotte Church (Festival of Voice, Wales Millennium Centre), Lotty's War (UK tour), Bakersfield Mist starring Kathleen Turner & Ian McDiarmid (Duchess Theatre), An Incident at the Border by Kieran Lynn (Finborough & Trafalgar Studios), The Merchant Of Venice, Othello and Twelfth Night for Singapore Repertory Theatre (Fort Canning Park, Singapore), Stories By Heart written by and starring multi-award-winning actor John Lithgow (National Theatre).

Beyond theatre, his work extends to large-scale concerts and events. He has directed performances for HRH The Prince of Wales’ 70th Birthday Celebration for the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and created events for the Welsh Guards Centenary Celebration in 2015 for the Welsh Guards Charity and for Sam Warburton’s testimonial year in 2018/19.

Guthrie has also served as a judge for the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) in 2023 and 2025, a selector for the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centres in 2024, and a jury member for the EEMAX Global awards in 2023. He served as the Artistic Director of the National Youth Theatre of Wales and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Guildford School of Acting.

He has a BA Honours in Acting and trained as a director at the National Theatre Studio. His work continues to foster international collaborations, champion new writing, and advance theatre as a vital and accessible art form.
